Through WILD, Hayley built confidence, made new friends and discovered strengths she didn't know she had.

WILD participants navigate a rocky mountain track during an outdoor adventure, surrounded by expansive alpine landscapes.
When Hayley* joined WILD, Each's outdoor adventure therapy program, she wasn't sure she belonged. Meeting new people felt daunting, and trying unfamiliar activities was well outside her comfort zone. But through outdoor adventures, new friendships and the support of the group, Hayley gradually built confidence in herself and discovered she was capable of more than she'd imagined.

Finding confidence one step at a time

For Hayley, saying yes to WILD wasn't easy. Like many young people, she felt nervous about meeting new people and stepping into a new environment where she didn't know anyone. WILD helped her build confidence in a safe and supportive environment.

Through shared outdoor experiences, she started building connections with others in the group. Conversations became easier. Friendships grew. Before long, she found herself looking forward to the weekly adventures and the chance to spend time with people who were on a similar journey.

As the program progressed, she noticed changes not only in her relationships with others, but also in how she saw herself.

WILD has helped me feel a lot more confident in myself in both friend-making ways and activity ways.

— Hayley

Discovering strengths through challenge

One of the things that makes WILD different is the opportunity to step outside everyday routines and try something new.

For Hayley, that meant taking on activities she would once have avoided. From rafting and abseiling to exploring caves, each experience challenged her to push past self-doubt and trust in her own abilities.

It wasn't always easy. There were moments of uncertainty and times when she questioned whether she could do it. But with encouragement from her peers and support from WILD facilitators, she kept going.

As the challenges grew, so did her confidence. What started as small steps outside her comfort zone became proof that she could achieve more than she thought possible.

More than an outdoor adventure

Alongside the adventure activities, Hayley found something else she hadn't expected: a sense of connection and belonging.

The time spent outdoors, learning new skills and sharing experiences with others helped her feel calmer, more connected and more positive about herself.

She says the impact on her wellbeing was significant.

Every time I push myself to come to WILD, it really helps with my mental health. Spending time with other young people and taking part in the activities has helped me feel happier.

— Hayley

Looking ahead

As the program came to an end, Hayley left with more than memories of outdoor adventures.

She left with new friendships, greater confidence and a stronger belief in herself.

Most importantly, she left with a mindset she plans to carry into the future.

“I will continue to push myself to do things I didn't think I could do.”

It's a simple statement, but it speaks to the heart of what WILD aims to achieve: helping people discover their strengths, build confidence and create positive change that lasts beyond the experience itself.
